When it came time for Canadian Tire to host their annual high-profile Backyard Living showcase of its spring and summer patio furnishings, they came to us to create a striking backdrop that would capture their theme of a cross-country road trip that takes a glimpse into some of Canada’s backyards.

The ride kicked off the moment guests arrived and were met with a vintage convertible Mustang to rev up anticipation and conjure images of summer road trip adventures.  We designed highway signage and incorporated faux turf to liven up the concrete surround and offer a summer-like welcome on a chilly April day.

The venue itself posed a variety of physical and technical challenges, namely an extremely fragile glass floor that couldn’t accommodate substantial weight or have anything dropped upon it – even something as light as a butter knife – due to a high risk of cracking.  The room itself room had a greenhouse effect with full windows, a glass ceiling, no installed power and a myriad of other restrictions, including an inability to hang or suspend anything – décor or otherwise.  The exterior also posed a number of obstacles by way of no existing power access and being positioned in the middle of a high-wind zone.

Knowing whatever environment we created would need to be free-standing and lightweight, we decided to divide the space into three separate areas with each housing a different vignette for a different collection of furniture.  Working with the themes of East Coast, West Coast and The Prairies, we designed postcard-style sets and backdrops that offered fun photo ops and room for guests to mingle amongst the furnishings.  Built by our friends at Punchklok Design & Build, we used foamcore to address the weight issues and make install and dismantle fairly simple.  We also incorporated custom floor decals to both add protection to the glass and provide colourful texture offering a sense of grass, wood and stone.

The graphics were a combination of our own design and the work of Canadian artist Mark Prosser.  The sets also featured a variety of greenery to complement each locale.

In the end, our space was a massive success.  The booth drew a near-constant flow of traffic and the interactive mural was extremely well received by all. Our client was thrilled with the excitement that was generated by the space and at how well their brand and product were showcased.  Feedback was overwhelmingly positive and the "Locomotive Red" (Premier PR16G04) cherry on top was the Best Booth Award our clients were able to share with their colleagues back at the office on Monday morning.

This project was a big win overall.  Our client was wowed by the transformation of the space and loved the theatre-style sets, which solved our location challenges and provided a kind of aesthetic for their showcase that really framed the products and brand in an entirely new way.

We're big proponents of team work and we were fortunate to have some of the best talent in the business collaborating with us to make it all come together.
