We were approached by Ontario Wood to create a large-scale installation at The Interior Design Show (IDS16) to promote their numerous partner suppliers, fabricators and craftspeople. Our challenge was to design something bold and attention-grabbing with a limited budget and tight deadline – and we were more than up for the task.

Zeroing in on the key message of “buying local” we designed a multi-sensory 360° experience that would connect with visitors on an emotional level by invoking a sense of Canadian pride and nostalgia. Our collaborators, a select team of landscape builders, helped us bring it to life. We conceived the Ontario Wood Trading Post as part homage to our proud history and part cozy cabin to contextualize local wood products in a relatable and inspired way.
Inside and out, the space harkened back to the traditional post that once served not only as marketplace, but as a gathering space and heart of the community. Surrounded by artistic elements fashioned from etched woodgrains and a wraparound porch, a staggered cluster of three connecting cabins clad in an overscale wood pattern was a modern take on its predecessors. Each cabin's interior was styled with carefully curated pieces by Ontario Wood partners to touch on the themes of work, live and play.
Designed to engage the senses and emotions, the spaces were inviting vignettes dotted with patriotic Ontario references and the artful integration of video, projection and even scent that encouraged visitors to touch, experience and play.

In the end, our installation was a resounding success. We far exceeded the expectations of our client, who was thrilled with how their product was presented to the design community and how the space unified their various suppliers, craftspeople and furniture makers in one cohesive space. IDS was delighted with the inspired design of the installation, which became a must-see for Show attendees who queued on line to enter the space and often stayed inside to lounge or partake in a game of crokinole. Comments from visitors were overwhelmingly positive with many noting it was one of the most interesting spaces at the show. And with numerous backdrops for photo ops, the installation generated significant social media activity.
